Kinematics of Hipparcos Visual Binaries. II. Stars with Ground-Based Orbital Solutions
This paper continues kinematical investigations of the Hipparcos visualbinaries with known orbits. A sample, consisting of 804 binary systemswith orbital elements determined from ground-based observations, isselected. The mean relative error of their parallaxes is about 12% andthe mean relative error of proper motions is about 4%. However, even 41%of the sample stars lack radial velocity measurements. The computedGalactic velocity components and other kinematical parameters are usedto divide the stars with known radial velocities into kinematical agegroups. The majority (92%) of binaries from the sample are thin diskstars, 7.6% have thick disk kinematics and only two binaries have halokinematics. Among them, the long-period variable Mira Ceti has a verydiscordant {Hipparcos} and ground-based parallax values. From the wholesample, 60 stars are ascribed to the thick disk and halo population. There is an urgent need to increase the number of the identified halobinaries with known orbits and substantially improve the situation withradial velocity data for stars with known orbits.

Research Note Hipparcos photometry: The least variable stars
The data known as the Hipparcos Photometry obtained with the Hipparcossatellite have been investigated to find those stars which are leastvariable. Such stars are excellent candidates to serve as standards forphotometric systems. Their spectral types suggest in which parts of theHR diagrams stars are most constant. In some cases these values stronglyindicate that previous ground based studies claiming photometricvariability are incorrect or that the level of stellar activity haschanged. Table 2 is only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/367/297

ICCD Speckle Observations of Binary Stars. XXIII. Measurements during 1982-1997 from Six Telescopes, with 14 New Orbits
We present 2017 observations of 1286 binary stars, observed by means ofspeckle interferometry using six telescopes over a 15 year period from1982 April to 1997 June. These measurements constitute the 23dinstallment in CHARA's speckle program at 2 to 4 m class telescopes andinclude the second major collection of measurements from the MountWilson 100 inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope. Orbital elements are alsopresented for 14 systems, seven of which have had no previouslypublished orbital analyses.

Spectropolarimetry of the Luminous Narrow-Line Seyfert Galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS 13224-3809
We observed the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS13224-3809 with a new spectropolarimeter on the Ritchey-Chrétienspectrograph at the CTIO 4 m telescope. Previously it had been suggestedthat IRAS 20181-2244 was a type 2 QSO and thus might contain an obscuredbroad-line region that could be detected by the presence of broad Balmerlines in the polarized flux. We found the object to be polarized atabout 2% and constant with wavelength (unlike most narrow-line Seyfert 1galaxies), but with no evidence of broad Balmer lines in polarized flux. The spectropolarimetry indicates that the scattering material is insidethe broad-line region. IRAS 13224-3809, notable for its high variabilityin X-ray and UV wavelengths, has a low polarization consistent with aGalactic interstellar origin.

Classification and Identification of IRAS Sources with Low-Resolution Spectra
IRAS low-resolution spectra were extracted for 11,224 IRAS sources. These spectra were classified into astrophysical classes, based on thepresence of emission and absorption features and on the shape of thecontinuum. Counterparts of these IRAS sources in existing optical andinfrared catalogs are identified, and their optical spectral types arelisted if they are known. The correlations between thephotospheric/optical and circumstellar/infrared classification arediscussed.

The Pulkovo Spectrophotometric Catalog of Bright Stars in the Range from 320 TO 1080 NM
A spectrophotometric catalog is presented, combining results of numerousobservations made by Pulkovo astronomers at different observing sites. The catalog consists of three parts: the first contains the data for 602stars in the spectral range of 320--735 nm with a resolution of 5 nm,the second one contains 285 stars in the spectral range of 500--1080 nmwith a resolution of 10 nm and the third one contains 278 stars combinedfrom the preceding catalogs in the spectral range of 320--1080 nm with aresolution of 10 nm. The data are presented in absolute energy unitsW/m(2) m, with a step of 2.5 nm and with an accuracy not lower than1.5--2.0%.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The CA II triplet lines in cool stars
Observations of the infrared triplet lines of ionized calcium arepresented for 91 stars brighter than m_v_=+7.0 in the spectral rangeF8-M4 of all luminosity classes and over a range of metallicities [Fe/H]from -0.65 to +0.60. The above spectra have been obtained at a spectralresolution of 0.4 A with a coude echelle spectrograph using the ThomsonCCD as the detector. This study has been undertaken primarily toinvestigate the dependence of the Ca II triplet strengths over the broadrange of atmospheric parameters like luminosity, temperature andmetallicity. The Ca II triplet lines are a powerful diagnostic of thestellar populations in galaxies because of their sensitivity to theabove parameters. Our detailed analysis indicates a strong correlationbetween the equivalent width of the Ca II triplet lines and surfacegravity, much stronger in metal rich stars than in metal poor stars. TheCa II equivalent widths are fairly insensitive to temperature over therange of luminosity covered. However, they are found to be quitesensitive to metallicity, more conspicuously in supergiants than ingiants and dwarfs. Observations are compared with recent theoreticalcalculations of these lines in NLTE atmospheres.

CCD observations of the H-alpha line in late G and K supergiants and their interpretation
CCD echelle spectra of the H-alpha line at 6563 A have been obtained fora sample of 30 G and K supergiants with a spectral resolution of about0.24 A. The data clearly indicate that the observed H-alpha profile is adeep absorption, implying large optical depths in the chromosphere. Also, the line cores are blueshifted in all the stars which suggests thechromospheres are expanding outward. Detailed radiative transfercalculations of H-alpha have been carried out in a spherically symmetricatmosphere with outward-positive velocity and temperature gradients, including explicitly the effects of ionization. The H-alpha lineprofiles have been computed for a wide range of parameters in order toreproduce the observed features of the line. Within the framework of ourmodel, the calculations reinforce the idea that the nonthermalvelocities have to be as large as 25-30 km/s to explain the large widthsof the observed profiles. The rates of mass outflow have been calculatedto lie in the range 10 exp -8 to 10 exp -9 solar mass/yr.

Photometry of F-K type bright giants and supergiants. I - Intermediate band and H-Beta observations
Over 1500 observations of 560 bright giants and supergiants of types F-Kare presented and compared to the observations by Gray and Olsen (1991).The present results include intermediate-band which is slightlydifferent from the Stromgren data by Gray and Olsen due to a differentwidth for the v filter. A systematic difference in m(1) - M(1) withdecreasing temperature is noted in the two H-Beta data sets, and thecorrelations are defined.

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations - 1991 edition
A revised version of the catalog of Fe/H determinations published by G.Cayrel et al. (1985) is presented. The catalog contains 3252 Fe/Hdeterminations for 1676 stars. The literature is complete up to December1990. The catalog includes only Fe/H determinations obtained from highresolution spectroscopic observations based on detailed spectroscopicanalyses, most of them carried out with model atmospheres. The catalogcontains a good number of Fe/H determinations for stars from open andglobular clusters and for some supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds.

Narrowband photometry of luminosity class I stars
Observational data in the alpha(16)Lambda(9) photometric system arepresented for 60 supergiant stars of luminosity class I, from O5 to K3.The results show a good affinity between the equivalent widths of thehydrogen H-alpha line and of the O I triplet at a wavelength of 7774 Awith the alpha(16) and Lambda(9) indices. The comparison betweenspectral type and each photometric index is also illustrated. Allsupergiant stars except four are separated from main-sequence stars, inthe alpha(16)Lambda(9) array.

Stellar integrated fluxes in the wavelength range 380 NM - 900 NM derived from Johnson 13-colour photometry
Petford et al. (1988) have reported measured integrated fluxes for 216stars with a wide spread of spectral type and luminosity, and mentionedthat a cubic-spline integration over the relevant Johnson 13-colormagnitudes, converted to fluxes using Johnson's calibration, is inexcellent agreement with those measurements. In this paper a list of thefluxes derived in this way, corrected for a small dependence on B-V, isgiven for all the 1215 stars in Johnson's 1975 catalog with completeentries.

Orbital binaries with variable components
Published observational data are compiled for 171 binary systems forwhich (1) orbital parameters have been computed and (2) one or bothcomponents are known or suspected to exhibit intrinsic variability. Theselection criteria for the catalog are discussed; the data are presentedin a large table; and brief notes on the unusual characteristics ofspecific binaries are provided.

Spectroscopy and abundances of 88 K giants in Baade's Window
Spectroscopic and photometric observations of 122 stars in the Baade'sWindow region of the Galactic bulge (and of 63 K giant comparison starsin the Galactic disk and globular clusters), obtained using anintensified Reticon detector and a 600-line/mm 5000-A-blazed grating inthe Cassegrain spectrograph (spectral resolution 5 A) of the 2.5-mDuPont telescope at Las Campagnas Observatory during 1980-1984, arereported. The sample selection criteria and data-analysis techniques areexplained, and the data (including line strengths for 34 features andderived abundances for 88 K giants) are presented in extensive tablesand graphs and discussed in detail. It is concluded that the metalabundances in the nuclear-bulge strong-lined giants are significantlygreater than those of the metal-rich giants in the solar neighborhood.

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations, 1984 edition
The present version of the Cayrel de Strobel et al. (1981) catalog ofFe/H abundance ratio determinations contains 1921 values for 1035 stars, which represents an augmentation over the previous publication of 48 and47 percent, respectively. In addition, the literature search conductedis complete up to December, 1983. Stellar metal abundance, effectivetemperature, spectroscopic gravity, spectral type, and photometricindices are covered.

Observations of emission from certain stars at millimeter wavelengths
The paper presents results of observations of five alpha(2) CVn-typestars, five emission-line stars, the object SS 433, and four possiblerelated objects at 13.5 and 8.15 mm. It is confirmed that stars ofalpha(2) CVn-type are not characterized by significant radio emission.Emission variations from the emission-line star MWC 349 were detectedthat could be caused by optical luminosity variations of the star.Observations of SS 433 do not exclude the presence of an extendedenvelope around this object with dimensions and mass close to those ofthe envelope around MWC 349. It is also found that 2013 + 370 could beclassified as a BL Lac object.

A determination of the effective temperatures, accelerations of gravity, and metallicity parameters of late-type stars from data on energy distribution in their spectra
The effective temperatures and surface gravities are determined for 297F-M stars for which detailed spectrum energy distribution curves areavailable. For some of the stars, the Fe/H ratio is estimated. Theaccuracy of the values obtained is found to be comparable to that of theestimates based on narrow-band photometry.

A catalogue of /Fe/H/ determinations
A catalog of iron/hydrogen abundance ratios for 628 stars is compiledbased on 1109 published values. The catalog consists of (1) a table ofabsolute iron abundance determinations in the solar photosphere ascompiled by Blackwell (1974); (2) the iron/hydrogen abundances of 628stars in the form of logarithmic differences between iron abundances inthe given star and a standard star, obtained from analyses ofhigh-dispersion spectra as well as useful stellar spectroscopic andphotometric parameters; and (3) indications of the mean dispersion andwavelength interval used in the analyses. In addition, statistics on thedistributions of the number of determinations per star and the apparentmagnitudes and spectral types of the stars are presented.

A photoelectric measurement of magnesium for late-type stars
A photoelectric index of MgH + Mg b for late-type stars has been createdby the addition of one filter bandpass to the DDO system. Measurementsshow that this index has good sensitivity to surface gravity for Kstars, and suggest that it can differentiate metal-poor halo giants fromdisk stars. From this index, involving measurement through two filtersalone, it appears that membership can be determined for stars on thegiant branch of globular clusters. It is possible that the index couldbe used, after calibration with cluster giants, to determine ages ofgiant stars in the field.
