Measurement of the Spin-Orbit Alignment in the Exoplanetary System HD 189733
We present spectroscopy of a transit of the exoplanet HD 189733b. Bymodeling the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect (the anomalous Doppler shift dueto the partial eclipse of the rotating stellar surface), we find theangle between the sky projections of the stellar spin axis and orbitnormal to be λ=-1.4d+/-1.1d. This is the third case of a ``hotJupiter'' for which λ has been measured. In all three casesλ is small, ruling out random orientations with 99.96%confidence, and suggesting that the inward migration of hot Jupitersgenerally preserves spin-orbit alignment.Data presented herein were obtained at the W. M. | Large and kinematically unbiased samples of G and K type stars. I - The dwarfs
Four-color, H-beta, and (R,I) photometry for the little-evolvedmain-sequence stars from the Bright Star Catalogue, South Galactic Pole,Griffin (1971), and Moore-Paddock-Wayman (Moore and Paddock 1950, andWayman 1960) samples are analyzed. The luminosity and heavy-elementabundances for these stars are calculated in terms of the Hyadessupercluster, the Wolf 630 group, the Sirius supercluster, and theKapteyn star group. The data reveal the presence of a metal-abundancedependent discontinuity near M(v) = +7 mag in the photometric parametersof dwarfs. The distributions of the abundances and the space motions ofthe sample stars are discussed.
