On the origin of field O-type stars
Aims. We aim to identify the origins of field O-stars in the nearest 2to 3 kpc around the Sun using the best presently available kinematicdata on O-stars and on young open clusters. We investigate the questionof whether the present-day data are consistent with the assumption thatO-stars have formed in groups (clusters, associations), or in isolation. Methods: We apply the epicycle theory to back-trace the orbits ofO-type stars and of candidate parent open clusters. Results: From the370 O-stars in the “Galactic O star catalog v 2.0” (GOSV2)we have investigated 93 stars classified as field, and found the originfor 73 of them in 48 open clusters younger than 30 Myr. Only for 32stars or about 9% of all O-stars from this catalogue is the question oftheir origin in groups not solved; some of them may have originated inisolation or may have disintegrated the group in which they formed.Fifty percent of the young open clusters (age < 30 Myr) in the“Catalogue of Open Cluster Data” (COCD) have O-stars asmembers, or have ejected at least one O-star in the first 10 Myr oftheir life, or both. During this period the average mass loss from openclusters by ejecting O-stars is found to be 3 to 5 M_ȯ per Myr. Weprove that ζ Pup had its origin in the open cluster Trumpler 10which it left about 2.5 Myr ago, and that its present-day distance is300 pc (compared to 440 pc before). The revised distance implies asignificant revision of the stellar parameters (a radius of 14 R_ȯ,a mass of 22.5 M_ȯ, and a luminosity of log L/L_ȯ of 5.74)i.e., ζ Pup is closer, less massive, and less luminous thanpreviously thought. Our findings provide independent estimates of thepresent-day distances and absolute magnitudes of field O-stars.

Proper-motion binaries in the Hipparcos catalogue. Comparison with radial velocity data
Context: .This paper is the last in a series devoted to the analysis ofthe binary content of the Hipparcos Catalogue. Aims: .Thecomparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning ashort (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncoverbinaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the shorttime span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission),since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the propermotion. Methods: .A list of candidate proper motion binaries isconstructed from a carefully designed χ2 test evaluatingthe statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 andHipparcos proper motions for 103 134 stars in common between the twocatalogues (excluding components of visual systems). Since similar listsof proper-motion binaries have already been constructed, the presentpaper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency ofproper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostlyradial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the NinthCatalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (S_B^9) is evaluated, as wellas for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, andfinally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity datain the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solarneighbourhood. Results: .Proper motion binaries are efficientlydetected for systems with parallaxes in excess of ~20 mas, and periodsin the range 1000-30 000 d. The shortest periods in this range(1000-2000 d, i.e., once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission)may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in theHipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binariesdetected among S_B9 systems having periods shorter than about400 d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving acomponent with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triplesystems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass(brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 bariumstars with parallaxes larger than 5 mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence forduplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). The Two Young Star Disks in the Central Parsec of the Galaxy: Properties, Dynamics, and Formation
We report the definite spectroscopic identification of ~=40 OBsupergiants, giants, and main-sequence stars in the central parsec ofthe Galaxy. Detection of their absorption lines has become possible withthe high spatial and spectral resolution and sensitivity of the adaptiveoptics integral field spectrometer SPIFFI/SINFONI on the ESO VLT.Several of these OB stars appear to be helium- and nitrogen-rich. Almostall of the ~=80 massive stars now known in the central parsec (centralarcsecond excluded) reside in one of two somewhat thick(~=0.14) rotating disks. These stellar disks have fairlysharp inner edges (R~=1'') and surface density profiles thatscale as R-2. We do not detect any OB stars outside thecentral 0.5 pc. The majority of the stars in the clockwise system appearto be on almost circular orbits, whereas most of those in the``counterclockwise'' disk appear to be on eccentric orbits. Based on itsstellar surface density distribution and dynamics, we propose that IRS13E is an extremely dense cluster(?core>~3×108 Msolarpc-3) that has formed in the counterclockwise disk. Thestellar contents of both systems are remarkably similar, indicating acommon age of ~=6+/-2 Myr. The K-band luminosity function of the massivestars suggests a top-heavy mass function and limits the total stellarmass contained in both disks to ~=1.5×104Msolar. Our data strongly favor in situ star formation fromdense gas accretion disks for the two stellar disks. This conclusion isvery clear for the clockwise disk and highly plausible for thecounterclockwise system.Based on observations with the Very Large Telescope of the EuropeanSouthern Observatory, Paranal, Chile.

A Medium Resolution Near-Infrared Spectral Atlas of O and Early-B Stars
We present intermediate-resolution (R~8000-12,000) high signal-to-noise(S/N) H- and K-band spectroscopy of a sample of 37 optically visiblestars, ranging in spectral type from O3 to B3 and representing mostluminosity classes. Spectra of this quality can be used to constrain thetemperature, luminosity, and general wind properties of OB stars, whenused in conjunction with sophisticated atmospheric model codes. Mostimportant is the need for moderately high resolutions (R>=5000) andvery high signal-to-noise (S/N>=150) spectra for a meaningful profileanalysis. When using near-infrared spectra for a classification system,moderately high signal-to-noise (S/N~100) is still required, though theresolution can be relaxed to just a thousand or two. In the Appendix weprovide a set of very high-quality near-infrared spectra of Brackettlines in six early-A dwarfs. These can be used to aid in the modelingand removal of such lines when early-A dwarfs are used for telluricspectroscopic standards.

New Estimates of the Solar-Neighborhood Massive Star Birthrate and the Galactic Supernova Rate
The birthrate of stars of masses >=10 Msolar is estimatedfrom a sample of just over 400 O3-B2 dwarfs within 1.5 kpc of the Sunand the result extrapolated to estimate the Galactic supernova ratecontributed by such stars. The solar-neighborhood Galactic-plane massivestar birthrate is estimated at ~176 stars kpc-3Myr-1. On the basis of a model in which the Galactic stellardensity distribution comprises a ``disk+central hole'' like that of thedust infrared emission (as proposed by Drimmel and Spergel), theGalactic supernova rate is estimated at probably not less than ~1 normore than ~2 per century and the number of O3-B2 dwarfs within the solarcircle at ~200,000.

Near-infrared identification of the counterpart to X1908+075: a new OB-supergiant X-ray binary
We report the near-infrared (near-IR) identification of the likelycounterpart to X1908+075, a highly absorbed Galactic X-ray sourcerecently suspected to belong to the rare class of OB supergiant-neutronstar binary systems. Our JHKs-band imaging of the fieldreveals the existence within the X-ray error boxes of a near-IR sourceconsistent with an early-type star lying at d~ 7 kpc and sufferingAV~ 16 mag of extinction, the latter value being in goodagreement with the hydrogen column density derived from modelling of theX-ray spectrum. Our follow-up, near-IR spectroscopic observationsconfirm the nature of this candidate and lead to a late O-typesupergiant classification, thereby supporting the identification of anew Galactic OB-supergiant X-ray binary.

A Galactic O Star Catalog
We have produced a catalog of 378 Galactic O stars with accuratespectral classifications that is complete for V<8 but includes manyfainter stars. The catalog provides cross-identifications with othersources; coordinates (obtained in most cases from Tycho-2 data);astrometric distances for 24 of the nearest stars; optical (Tycho-2,Johnson, and Strömgren) and NIR photometry; group membership,runaway character, and multiplicity information; and a Web-based versionwith links to on-line services.

Catalog of Galactic OB Stars
An all-sky catalog of Galactic OB stars has been created by extendingthe Case-Hamburg Galactic plane luminous-stars surveys to include 5500additional objects drawn from the literature. This work brings the totalnumber of known or reasonably suspected OB stars to over 16,000.Companion databases of UBVβ photometry and MK classifications forthese objects include nearly 30,000 and 20,000 entries, respectively.

An unidentified variable gamma-ray source near the galactic plane detected by COMPTEL
We report the detection of an unidentified gamma -ray source near theGalactic plane by the COMPTEL experiment aboard the Compton Gamma-RayObservatory. The source is detected at a significance level of ~7.2sigma in the energy range 1-3 MeV and at ~ 4.6sigma in the lower0.75-1 MeV band in the time period March to July 1995. At energies above3 MeV are only marginal hints or upper limits obtained. The MeV spectrumhas a soft shape. Strong flux variability is found within one year atenergies below 3 MeV. Possible counterparts of galactic andextragalactic nature are discussed.

Observations of OB-stars at the former Leiden Southern Station
About 700 stars, mostly OB-stars, were observed by the author at theformer Leiden Southern Station at Hartebeespoortdam, South Africa, inthe observing seasons 1965, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1977, 1978. Observationswere made in the five channels of the Walraven photometric system. Dueto weathering of the telescope mirror the W channel gave no reliableresults for the faintest stars (m = 11 mag); in these cases the U-Wcolour index is not given. The change in sensitivity in the V channel,supposedly having occurred in 1968, was not recognised. Fundamental parameters of Galactic luminous OB stars. V. The effect of microturbulence
We study the effect of microturbulence in the line formationcalculations of H and He lines, in the parameter range typical for O andearly B stars. We are specially interested in its effect on thedetermination of stellar parameters: Teff, log g andspecially on the He abundance. We first analyze the behaviour of H andHe model lines between 4 000 and 5 000 Äwith microturbulence andfind that for O stars only He I lines and He Ii lambda 4686 are sensiblyaffected by microturbulence, and that models with lower gravities, theones suitable for supergiants, are more sensitive to it. Using a testprocedure we show that the expected changes in Teff, log gand Helium abundance due to the inclusion of microturbulence in theanalysis, are small. We analyze five stars (two late, one intermediateand two early O stars) using microturbulence velocities of 0 and 15kms-1 and confirm the result of the previous test. Theparameters obtained for 15 kms-1 differ from the ones at 0kms-1 within the limits of the standard error box of ouranalysis. Only later types reduce their He abundance, by 0.02 in epsilon. Comparing with values in the literature we find that the range of ourchanges agree with previous results. In some cases other effects can addto microturbulence, and further reduce the He abundance up to 0.04. Thequality of the line fits only improves for He I lambda 4471, but not tothe extent of completely solving the so-called dilution effect.Therefore our conclusion is that microturbulence is affecting thederivation of stellar parameters, but its effect is comparable to theadopted uncertainties. Thus it can reduce moderate He overabundances andsolve line fit quality differences, but it cannot explain by itselflarge He overabundances in O stars. The INT is operated on the island ofLa Palma by the RGO in the Spanish Obervatorio de El Roque de losMuchachos of the Instituto de Astrof\'\i sica de Canarias.

Five-colour photometry of OB-stars in the Southern Hemisphere
Observations of OB-stars, made in 1959 and 1960 at the Leiden SouthernStation near Hartebeespoortdam, South Africa, with the VBLUW photometerattached to the 90 cm light-collector, are given in this paper. They arecompared with photometry obtained by \cite[Graham (1968),]{gra68}\cite[Walraven & Walraven (1977),]{wal77} \cite[Lub & Pel(1977)]{lub77} and \cite[Van Genderen et al. A second dust episode of the Wolf-Rayet system WR 19: another long-period WC+O colliding-wind binary
We present observations of WR 19 showing an infraredexcess due to newly created dust similar to an event observed in 1988.We suggest that these episodes of dust-formation are periodic (P ~ 10yr) and related to the binary nature of the object, comparable to thecolliding-wind binary WR 140. In support of thisthesis we identified absorption lines from a companion of spectral typeO9.5-9.7. We propose monitoring the object to determine orbitalparameters, non-thermal radio emission and the accurate shape of theinfrared light-curve. UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars
A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.

Wolf-Rayet stars and O-star runaways with HIPPARCOS. II. Photometry
Abundant {HIPPARCOS photometry over 3 years of 141 O and Wolf-Rayetstars, including 8 massive X-ray binaries, provides a magnificentvariety of light curves at the sigma ~ 1-5% level. Among the mostinteresting results, we mention: optical outbursts in HD 102567 (MXRB),coinciding with periastron passages; drastic changes in the light curveshape of HD 153919 (MXRB); previously unknown long-term variability ofHD 39680 (O6V:[n]pe var) and WR 46 (WN3p); unusual flaring of HDE 308399(O9V); ellipsoidal variations of HD 64315, HD 115071 and HD 160641;rotationally modulated variations in HD 66811=zeta Pup (O4Inf) and HD210839=lambda Cep (O6I(n)fp); dust formation episode in WR 121 (WC9). Ina statistical sense, the incidence of variability is slightly higheramong the WR stars, which might be explained by the higher percentage ofknown binary systems. Wolf-Rayet stars and O-star runaways with HIPPARCOS. I. Kinematics
Reliable systemic radial velocities are almost impossible to secure forWolf-Rayet stars, difficult for O stars. Therefore, to study the motions- both systematic in the Galaxy and peculiar - of these two relatedtypes of hot, luminous star, we have examined the Hipparcos propermotions of some 70 stars of each type. We find that (a) both groupsfollow Galactic rotation in the same way, (b) both have a similarfraction of ``runaways'', (c) mean kinetic ages based on displacementand motion away from the Galactic plane tend to slightly favour thecluster ejection over the the binary supernova hypothesis for theirformation, and (d) those with significant peculiar supersonic motionrelative to the ambient ISM, tend to form bow shocks in the direction ofthe motion. Cross-correlation characteristics of OB stars from IUE spectroscopy
We present a catalogue of homogeneous measures of the linewidthparameter, v_esin i, for 373 O-type stars and early B supergiants(including the separate components of 25 binary and three triplesystems), produced by cross-correlating high-resolution,short-wavelength IUE spectra against a `template' spectrum of tauSco. Wealso tabulate terminal velocities. There are no O supergiants in oursample with v_esin i<65 km s^-1, and only one supergiant earlier thanB5 has v_esin i<50 km s^-1, confirming that an important linebroadening mechanism in addition to rotation must be present in theseobjects. A calibration of the area under the cross-correlation peakagainst spectral type is used to obtain estimates of continuum intensityratios of the components in 28 spectroscopically binary or multiplesystems. At least seven SB2 systems show evidence for the `Struve-Sahadeeffect', a systematic variation in relative line strength as a functionof orbital phase. The stellar wind profiles of the most rapid rotator inour sample, the O9III:n* star HD 191423 (v_esin i=436km s^-1), show itto have a `wind-compressed disc' similar to that of HD 93521; this starand other rapid rotators are good candidates for studies of non-radialpulsation.

The Winds of Hot Stars in External Galaxies. III. HST UV Spectroscopy of O and B Supergiants in M31 and M33
HST Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) UV (1200-3300 A) spectra of ninelate-O and early-B supergiants in M31, and one B1.5 supergiant in M33,are presented. The morphologies of the UV line spectra are discussed andcompared with those of Galactic and Magellanic Cloud stars of similaroptical spectral type. The UV spectral signatures of the M31 and M33supergiants are similar to the comparison stars, in general, with somedifferences due to metallicity effects. Chemical peculiarities are seenin three M31 supergiants. The strength of the P Cygni profiles in thewind lines indicates abundances similar to the LMC in M33, and similarto our Galaxy in M31. Wind velocities in M31 supergiants are comparableto Galactic values. Narrow absorption components at high velocity areseen in the wind of the M33 supergiant, revealing clumpiness in thewind.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Diffuse interstellar bands and UV extinction curves. The missing link.
The connection between diffuse interstellar bands and components of theinterstellar ultraviolet extinction curve, decomposed according to theFitzpatrick & Massa scheme, is analysed from new observations ofseveral DIBs in the line of sight to 28 stars measured by IUE. We findthat the strength of the 217.5nm bump positively correlates with DIBstrength, whereas correlations with a negative slope exist with the FUVnon-linear rise and the width of the bump. There is no correlation withlinear rise. The relation of bump height versus DIB strength does notpass through zero. The results are interpreted within the polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) framework. They strengthen the hypothesisthat the FUV non-linear rise is produced by neutral PAHs, whereas DIBcarriers are found among some ionised or radical PAHs.

A spectroscopic database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars
A database of published spectral classifications for objects in theStepenson-Sanduleak Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way catalog hasbeen compiled from the literature. A total of 6182 classifications for2562 stars from 139 sources are incorporated.

An atlas of ultraviolet P Cygni profiles
We have selected spectra of 232 stars from the International UltravioletExplorer (IUE) archives for inclusion in an atlas intended for varioususes but tailored especially for the study of stellar winds. The atlascovers the range in spectral types from O3 to F8. The full atlas coversthe reduced and normalized high resolution spectra from the IUE long-and short-wavelength spectrographs. Here we discuss the selection of thestars and the data reduction, and we present in velocity units theprofiles of lines formed in the stellar winds. The selected lines covera wide range of ionizations, allowing a comparison of the profiles fromdifferent ions in the wind of each star and a comparison of thedifferent wind lines as a function spectral type and luminosity. We alsopresent the basic data on the program stars to facilitate study of thedependence of wind features on stellar parameters such as luminosity,temperature, escape velocity, and v sin i. We provide an overview of thecharacteristic behavior of the wind lines in the H-R diagram. Thecomplete spectra are available in digital form through the NASAAstrophysics Data System (ADS). We offer a description of the electronicdatabase that is available through the ADS and guidelines for obtainingaccess to that database.

Helium chemistry of ONC supergiants.
We present high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopicobservations of the Galactic late-O supergiants HD154811 (OC9.7Iab),HD154368 (O9.5Iab), and HD123008 (ON9.5Iab). The spectra of these starsexemplify the carbon and nitrogen line-strength anomalies characteristicof the ONC supergiants. A hydrogen/helium non-LTE model-atmosphereanalysis is carried out using extensive model atoms. Helium abundances(by number) of 0.09, 0.13, and 0.17 are obtained for the OC, normal O,and ON stars respectively. These results are consistent with Walborn'shypothesis that OC supergiants have a normal (i.e., cosmic) heliumabundance whereas the morphologically-normal O supergiants and, to agreater extent, the ON supergiants exhibit the products ofnucleosynthetic processing at their surfaces. We note that thediagnostic line HeII?4200 is probably contaminated by a NIII linein late-O supergiants.

An IUE survey of interstellar H I LY alpha absorption. 1: Column densities
We measure Galactic interstellar neutral hydrogen column densities byanalyzing archival interstellar Ly alpha absorption line data toward 554B2 and hotter stars observed at high resolution with the IUE satellite.This study more than doubles the number of lines of sight with measuresof N(H I) based on Ly alpha. We have included the scattered lightbackground correction algorithm of Bianchi and Bohlin in our datareduction. We use the correlation between the Balmer discontinuity(c1) index and the stellar Ly alpha absorption in order toassess the effects of stellar Ly alpha contamination. Approximately 40%of the B stars with measured (c1) index, exhibit seriousstellar Ly alpha contamination. One table contains the derived values ofthe interstellar N(H I) for 393 stars with at most small amounts ofstellar contamination. Another lists the observed values of total N(H I)for 161 stars with suspected stellar Ly alpha contamination and/oruncertain stellar parameters.

An IUE survey of interstellar H I LY alpha absorption. 2: Interpretations
We present an analysis of interstellar neutral hydrogen column densitiesobtained from archival Ly alpha absorption line data toward the completesample of B2 and hotter stars observed at high spectral resolution withthe IUE satellite. The full sample includes 554 stars and more thandoubles the number of lines of sight previously observed. Many of the B2and B1.5 stars exhibit contamination from stellar Ly alpha absorption,and were excluded from the subsequent analysis. The final working sampleincludes 393 stars. We present statistical averages for a number ofquantities derived for the sample. The stars range in distance from 0.12to 11 kpc with an average distance of 2.1 kpc. Values for averagesight-line density range from 0.017 to 8.62 atoms cm-3, withan overall average of 0.23 atoms cm-3. Neutral hydrogen anddust are well correlated, with N(H I)/E(B - V) = 4.93 x 1021cm-2 mag-1, and N(H I)/E(Bump) = 2.17 x1021 cm-2 mag-1. There is an increasein the H I to dust ratios for the densest sight lines. Evidently, the HI to dust ratios in dense clouds are higher than in the lower densitymedium between the clouds and in interarm directions. The effect isprobably an indication of dust modification in the dense clouds. The H Ito dust ratios are approx. 17% smaller for the sight lines to O starscompared to the ratios found toward B stars. We have identified sightlines with anomalously large and small values of N(H I)/E(B - V) and H(HI)/E(Bump). Some of these sight lines are well-known examples ofpeculiar extinction (i.e., HD 147933 and HD 37061 (NU Ori)). Others areless well known and may provide important new examples of regions withhighly modified dust. The number of stars with anomalously low H I todust ratios is disproportionately larger than the number of stars withanomalously high H I to dust ratios. The distribution of the gas awayform the Galactic plane for the sample of objects is complex. For thesubset of 375 stars whose lines of sight have a statistically lowprobablility of intersecting a large cloud, the distribution may beroughly approximated by an exponential density distribution, with amidplane density of 0.366 atoms cm-3, a scale height of 195pc, and a random logarithmic scattering parameter sigma p of0.159 dex.
