Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. | HIPPARCOS distances of X-ray selected stars: implications on their nature as stellar population. We present the parallaxes, measured by Hipparcos, for a sample of X-rayselected stars. The stars belong to the stellar sample of the EinsteinExtended Medium Sensitivity Survey. They are all at galactic latitude|b|>20deg, and are generally far away from known star formingregions. Several of these stars show lithium abundance and activitylevel typical of very young stars with ages comparable to that of thePleiades. We show that the majority of our sample stars are on the mainsequence, with only =~20% being giants. We do not find a significantpresence of pre-main sequence stars in our sample, notwithstanding thefact that some of our stars have a considerable lithium abundance,showing that the stars observed are most likely young and activemain-sequence objects.

| Radial-velocity measurements. V - Ground support of the HIPPARCOS satellite observation program The paper presents data on 1070 radial velocity measurements of starsdistributed in 39 fields measuring 4 deg x 4 deg. The PPO series ofFehrenbach et al. (1987) and Duflot et al. (1990) is continued using theFehrenbach objective prism method.
| An Einstein Observatory SAO-based catalog of B-type stars About 4000 X-ray images obtained with the Einstein Observatory are usedto measure the 0.16-4.0 keV emission from 1545 B-type SAO stars fallingin the about 10 percent of the sky surveyed with the IPC. Seventy-fourdetected X-ray sources with B-type stars are identified, and it isestimated that no more than 15 can be misidentified. Upper limits to theX-ray emission of the remaining stars are presented. In addition tosummarizing the X-ray measurements and giving other relevant opticaldata, the present extensive catalog discusses the reduction process andanalyzes selection effects associated with both SAO catalog completenessand IPC target selection procedures. It is concluded that X-rayemission, at the level of Lx not less than 10 exp 30 ergs/s, is quitecommon in B stars of early spectral types (B0-B3), regardless ofluminosity class, but that emission, at the same level, becomes lesscommon, or nonexistent, in later B-type stars.
| The local interstellar medium and soft local X-ray radiation The nature of the soft local X-ray radiation is discussed. The questionof whether the radiation originates from a local bubble, a number ofnonlocal bubbles, or the Galactic corona is examined. Attention is givento Rosat findings and to the known characteristics of the Dracomolecular cloud, the Hercules H I shell, and the Hercules field.
| Interstellar NA I D line studies of stars towards the Draco nebula This study presents new high-dispersion CCD spectra of sodium for eightprogram stars located in the direction of the high-latitude Dracomolecular cloud (DMC). The derived lower distance limit of 180 pc abovethe Galactic plane was evaluated from nondetection of interstellarabsorption lines of sodium at the Draco velocity in sight lines of B8-F0type stars. This result is in agreement with former distance estimatesfrom star counts as well as from UBV photometric extinctionmeasurements. The existence of the most negative velocity components inspectra of the most distant stars suggests a more speculative distanceestimate of 400-600 pc for the DMC. The present determination of a lowerdistance limit to the DMC from an interstellar absorption-line studysupplements the few existing optical determinations of firm (upper)distance limits to other high-latitude molecular clouds.
| The Einstein Observatory Extended Medium-Sensitivity Survey. II - The optical identifications The optical identifications are presented of the Einstein ExtendedMedium-Sensitivity Survey (EMSS), including the methodology used tooptically identify the EMSS sources and the uncertainties involved withthat process. The optical properties of the classes of X-ray, optical,and radio data for each of the identified and, as yet, unidentifiedsources of the survey are described. A new class of X-ray emitters,cooling flow galaxies, is proposed. The criteria used to determinewhether the proposed optical counterpart to the X-ray source is aplausible identification are described. Plausibility is based on theoptical classification of the counterpart, e.g., AGN, cluster, G star,and the X-ray-to-optical flux ratios previously observed for theseclasses of X-ray emitters. Two independent schemes of opticalclassification of the counterparts are used to check the plausibility ofthese identifications; one is based on moderate-resolution opticalspectroscopy, and the other, on inferred X-ray luminosity and theoverall energy distribution.
| The Einstein Observatory Extended Medium-Sensitivity Survey. I - X-ray data and analysis This paper presents the results of the analysis of the X-ray data andthe optical identification for the Einstein Observatory ExtendedMedium-Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). The survey consists of 835serendipitous sources detected at or above 4 times the rms level in 1435imaging proportional counter fields with centers located away from theGalactic plane. Their limiting sensitivities are about (5-300) x 10 tothe -14th ergs/sq cm sec in the 0.3-3.5-keV energy band. A total area of778 square deg of the high-Galactic-latitude sky has been covered. Thedata have been analyzed using the REV1 processing system, which takesinto account the nonuniformities of the detector. The resulting EMSScatalog of X-ray sources is a flux-limited and homogeneous sample ofastronomical objects that can be used for statistical studies.
| Visual multiples. VIII - 1000 MK types A total of 1000 new classifications are given for stars brighter than B= 8.0 mag in the Aitken double star catalog. The classificationssupplement 865 classifications obtained in 1981 and 1984. Among thenewly discovered stars are 12 new Ap stars, eight Lambda Bootis stars,one Ba II star, and 60 Am stars. A detailed list of the newclassifications is given.
| Meridian observations made with the Carlsberg Automatic Meridian Circle at Brorfelde (Copenhagen University Observatory) 1981-1982 The 7-inch transit circle instrument with which the present position andmagnitude catalog for 1577 stars with visual magnitudes greater than11.0 was obtained had been equipped with a photoelectric moving slitmicrometer and a minicomputer to control the entire observationalprocess. Positions are reduced relative to the FK4 system for each nightover the whole meridian rather than the usual narrow zones. Thepositions of the FK4 stars used in the least squares solution are alsogiven in the catalog.
| A magnitude limited stellar X-ray survey and the F star X-ray luminosity function An X-ray survey has been conducted of stars brighter than visualmagnitude 8.5 that have serendipitously fallen into the fields of viewof the Imaging Proportional Counter of the Einstein Observatory. Thesurvey includes 227 separate 1 x 1 deg fields, containing 274 stars witha visual magnitude of no more than 8.5 and covering a wide range ofspectral types and luminosity classes. X-ray emission was detected from33 stars, and upper limits have been determined for the remainder of thesample. F type stars dominate the detected sample, and most of these areshown to be dwarfs. An X-ray luminosity function for dF stars has beendeduced, and reveals that the average 0.2-4.0 keV luminosity of thesestars is around 10 to the 29th erg/sec. Constraints have been placed onthe high luminosity tails and medians of the X-ray luminosity functionsfor other types of stars.
| Results from an extensive Einstein stellar survey The preliminary results of the Einstein Observatory stellar X-ray surveyare presented. To date, 143 soft X-ray sources have been identified withstellar counterparts, leaving no doubt that stars in general constitutea pervasive class of low-luminosity galactic X-ray sources. Stars alongthe entire main sequence, of all luminosity classes, pre-main sequencestars as well as very evolved stars have been detected. Early type OBstars have X-ray luminosities in the range 10 to the 31st to 10 to the34th ergs/s; late type stars show a somewhat lower range of X-rayemission levels, from 10 to the 26th to 10 to the 31st ergs/s. Late typemain-sequence stars show little dependence of X-ray emission levels uponstellar effective temperature; similarly, the observations suggest weak,if any, dependence of X-ray luminosity upon effective gravity. Instead,the data show a broad range of emission levels (about three orders ofmagnitude) throughout the main sequence later than F0.
