Lithium abundances of the local thin disc stars
Lithium abundances are presented for a sample of 181 nearby F and Gdwarfs with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes. The stars are on circularorbits about the Galactic centre and, hence, are identified as belongingto the thin disc. This sample is combined with two published surveys toprovide a catalogue of lithium abundances, metallicities ([Fe/H]),masses, and ages for 451 F-G dwarfs, almost all belonging to the thindisc. The lithium abundances are compared and contrasted with publishedlithium abundances for F and G stars in local open clusters. The fieldstars span a larger range in [Fe/H] than the clusters for which [Fe/H]~=0.0 +/- 0.2. The initial (i.e. interstellar) lithium abundance of thesolar neighbourhood, as derived from stars for which astration oflithium is believed to be unimportant, is traced from logɛ(Li) =2.2 at [Fe/H]=-1 to logɛ(Li) = 3.2 at +0.1. This form for theevolution is dependent on the assumption that astration of lithium isnegligible for the stars defining the relation. An argument is advancedthat this latter assumption may not be entirely correct, and, theevolution of lithium with [Fe/H] may be flatter than previouslysupposed. A sharp Hyades-like Li dip is not seen among the field starsand appears to be replaced by a large spread among lithium abundances ofstars more massive than the lower mass limit of the dip. Astration oflithium by stars of masses too low to participate in the Li dip isdiscussed. These stars show little to no spread in lithium abundance ata given [Fe/H] and mass.

The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of ˜14 000 F and G dwarfs
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our˜63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. Rotational Velocities of B, A, and Early-F Narrow-lined Stars
Projected rotational velocities for 58 B, A, and early-F stars have beendetermined from high-resolution spectroscopic observations made at KittPeak National Observatory with the coudé feed telescope. All thestars are slowly rotating with vsini<60 km s-1. Because oftheir low rotational velocities, 15 of the stars have been observed asprospective, early-type, radial velocity standards.

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright main-sequence stars and subgiant stars
We present X-ray data for all main-sequence and subgiant stars ofspectral types A, F, G, and K and luminosity classes IV and V listed inthe Bright Star Catalogue that have been detected as X-ray sources inthe ROSAT all-sky survey; several stars without luminosity class arealso included. The catalogue contains 980 entries yielding an averagedetection rate of 32 percent. In addition to count rates, sourcedetection parameters, hardness ratios, and X-ray fluxes we also listX-ray luminosities derived from Hipparcos parallaxes. The Angular Momentum of Main Sequence Stars and Its Relation to Stellar Activity
Rotational velocities are reported for intermediate-mass main sequencestars it the field. The measurements are based on new, high S/N CCDspectra from the Coudé Feed Telescope of the Kitt Peak NationalObservatory. We analyze these rotation rates for a dependence on bothmass and age. We compare the average rotation speeds of the field starswith mean velocities for young stars in Orion, the Alpha Persei cluster,the Pleiades, and the Hyades. The average rotation speeds of stars moremassive than $\sim1.6$ \msun\experience little or no change during theevolutionary lifetimes of these stars on the zero age main sequence orwithin the main sequence band. Less massive stars in the range betwee n1.6\msun\ and 1.3\msun\ also show little decline in mean rotation ratewhile they are on the main sequence, and at most a factor of 2 decreasein velocity as they evolve off the main sequence. The {\it e}-foldingtime for the loss of angular momentum b y the latter group of stars isat least 1--2 billion years. This inferred characteristic time scale forspindown is far longer than the established rotational braking time forsolar-type stars with masses below $\sim1.3$ \msun. We conclude from acomparison of the trends in rotation with trends in chromospheric andcoronal activity that the overall decline in mean rotation speed alongthe main sequence, from $\sim2$ \msun\ down to $\sim1.3$ \msun, isimposed during the pre-main sequence phase of evolution, and that thispattern changes little thereafter while the star resides on the mainsequence. The magnetic activity implicated in the rotational spindown ofthe Sun and of similar stars during their main sequence lifetimes mus ttherefore play only a minor role in determining the rotation rates ofthe intermediate mass stars, either because a solar-like dynamo is weakor absent, or else the geometry of the magnetic field is appreciablyless effective in removing angular momentu m from these stars. Beryllium in Lithium-deficient F and G Stars
We present the results of an extensive search, conducted at theCanada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m telescope, for beryllium (Be) in theatmospheres of lithium-deficient F and G dwarfs. We also report revisedlithium (Li) estimates for the entire sample using previously publishedequivalent widths and updated, consistently calculated stellarparameters. Abundances derived from an LTE analysis of the Li and Beline-forming regions confirm the suspicion that F stars which deplete Liby factors of 10-200 may also be beryllium deficient. Photospheric Beconcentrations range from near meteoritic levels in G dwarfs to factorsof 10-100 below this assumed initial abundance in hotter stars.Moreover, significant Be deficiencies appear in stars that populate a600 K wide effective temperature window centered on 6500 K. This Beabundance gap is reminiscent of the Li gap observed in open clusters.Also, the discovery of 12 probable "110 Herculis" stars, objects thatexhibit a depleted, but detected, surface concentration of both Li andBe, provides a powerful means of differentiating between the possiblephysical processes responsible for observed light element abundancepatterns. Indeed, the Be data presented here, in conjunction with thenewly calculated Li abundances, lead to the following conclusionsregarding the hypothesized, light element depletion scenarios: Mass losscannot account for stars with severely depleted (but detected) Li andmoderate Be deficiencies. The predicted timescales for surface depletiondue to microscopic diffusion are too long for significant Li and Bedeficiencies to develop in cool (Teff <= 6200) stars; nevertheless,underabundances are observed in these stars. Diffusion theory alsopredicts Li and Be depletion rates to be comparable, but it is evidentthat Li and Be depletion proceed at different speeds. Models of mixinginduced by internal gravity waves cannot explain mild Be deficiencies incool dwarfs. A key meridional circulation prediction regarding theefficiency and severity of Li and Be dilution is shown to be fallible.However, rotationally induced mixing, a turbulent blending of materialbeneath the surface convection zone due to the onset of instabilitiesfrom superficial angular momentum loss, predicts both the observed lightelement depletion morphology as well as the existence of 110 Heranalogs. These "Yale" mixing models provide, therefore, the mostplausible explanation, of those presented, for the observed Li and Beabundances.

A catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations: 1996 edition
A fifth Edition of the Catalogue of [Fe/H] determinations is presentedherewith. It contains 5946 determinations for 3247 stars, including 751stars in 84 associations, clusters or galaxies. The literature iscomplete up to December 1995. The 700 bibliographical referencescorrespond to [Fe/H] determinations obtained from high resolutionspectroscopic observations and detailed analyses, most of them carriedout with the help of model-atmospheres. Placid stars and excited gas in NGC 4826
We present an investigation of the kinematics of the stars and theionized gas along the principal axes of the galaxy NGC 4826. This galaxyis known to contain two nested, counterrotating, gas disks of a few108 solar mass each, with the inner disk extending toapproximately 1 kpc and the outer disk extending beyond. The stellarkinematics along the major axis, extending across the transition regionbetween the two gas disks, show no hint of velocity reversal orincreased velocity dispersion. The stars always rotate in the same senseas the inner gas disk, and thus it is the outer disk which'counterrotates'. The projected circular velocities inferred from thestellar kinematics and from the H I disks agree to within approximately10 km/s, supporting other evidence that the stellar and gaseous disksare coplanar to approximately 7 deg. Using a detailed analysis of thestellar velocity distributions, we can limit the fraction ofcounterrotating stars in the outer disk to approximately less than or =0.05, or approximately less than or = 2 x 108 solar mass.This upper limit is comparable to the mass of detected counterrotatinggas. This low mass of counterrotating material, combined with thelow-velocity dispersion in the stellar disk, implies that NGC 4826cannot be the product of a retrograde merger of galaxies, unless theydiffered by at least an order of magnitude in mass. The velocities ofthe ionized gas along the major axis are in agreement with that of thestars for R less than 0.75 kpc. The subsequent transition towardapparent counterrotation of the ionized gas is spatially well resolved,extending over approximately 0.6 kpc in radius. The kinematics of thisregion are not symmetric with respect to the galaxy center. On thesoutheast side there is a significant region in which vproj(H II) much less than vcirc approximately 150 km/s, but sigma(H II) approximately 65 km/s. The kinematic asymmetries cannot beexplained with any stationary dynamical model, even is gas inflow orwarps were invoked. The gas in this transition region shows a diffusespatial structure, strong (N II) and (S II) emission, as well as thehigh-velocity dispersion. These data present us with the conundrum ofexplaining a galaxy in which a stellar disk, and two counterrotating H Idisks, at smaller and much larger radii, appear in equilibrium andnearly coplanar, yet in which the transition region between the gasdisks is not in steady state.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Oxygen abundances in F-type stars of the Hyades and the Ursa Major group
We have derived the oxygen abundances of 50 F-type main-sequence stars,belonging to the Hyades open cluster, the Ursa Major group, and thefield, using an NLTE analysis of the infrared triplet lines of O I at7771-7775 AA. The stars of the middle F-range have previously been shownto exhibit a marked reduction in lithium abundance compared with bothcooler and hotter objects in the same systems: the 'Li gap', for whichseveral explanations have been proposed. Our results here show asubstantial measure of uniformity in the oxygen abundances over therange in T(eff) between 5800 and 7400 K. The data might indicate a smalldip (less than 0.1 dex) in the oxygen abundance for stars located in theLi gap. Microscopic diffusion seems to be the only known mechanism ableto produce an oxygen dip. If this mechanism were also responsible forthe Li gap, it would have to account for a depletion of up to two ordersof magnitude in lithium and, at the same time, less than 0.1 dex inoxygen. We note, however, that turbulent mixing could modify amicroscopic diffusion pattern in order to yield the observed abundances.

Magnetic activity in dwarf stars with shallow convective envelopes
The magnetic activity in dwarf stars with shallow convective envelopesis addressed by studying the C II and soft X-ray surface flux densitiesin relation to the stellar rotation velocity. The C II emission from theacoustically heated basal atmospheric component increases withincreasing T(eff) up to at least B-V about 0.25, reaching a level ofabout 8 x 10 exp 4 erg/sq cm/s for early F-type dwarf stars. Arelationship between rotation rate and level of magnetic activity isfound to extend down to at least B-V about 0.25, although the C IIemission associated with the magnetic activity at B-V = 0.25 issuppressed by a factor of about 100 as compared to stars cooler than B-Vabout 0.60 with the same rotation rate. The suppression of activity isstrongly color-dependent below B-V about 0.60, with the dynamoefficiency leveling off for cooler stars. The radiative lossesassociated with magnetic activity do not show a noticeable dependence oncolor in diagrams relating fluxes from chromosphere and corona for F-,G-, and K-type dwarf stars, suggesting comparable atmospheric structuresfor the magnetic component. The observed mean rotational velocities as afunction of spectral type are shown to be consistent with theassumptions of (1) a reduced dynamo efficiency and (2) a comparablemechanism for angular momentum loss through a stellar wind for allmagnetically active cool stars.

Binary star orbits from speckle interferometry. IV - The old disk population star HR 1071
HR 1071 (F7V, V = +6.36) is an old disk population star of lowrotational velocity, moderately low metallicity, and extremely low Liabundance. The star was not recognized as being a binary system untilits discovery as such from speckle observations obtained in late 1985.Rapid orbital motion has now permitted us to make a preliminary orbitdetermination from which we find an orbital period of 13.8 yr. Combiningthe elements of the apparent orbit with an estimation of the distance tothe system and with a qualitative determination of the magnitudedifference, we show that the system is a likely candidate for detectionas a double-lined spectroscopic binary. This provides an excellentopportunity to directly determine masses and luminosities for thecomponents of this intersting system. Finally, we discuss theimplications of the duplicity of HR 1071 and other stars upon lithiumabundance.

A catalogue of Fe/H determinations - 1991 edition
A revised version of the catalog of Fe/H determinations published by G.Cayrel et al. (1985) is presented. The catalog contains 3252 Fe/Hdeterminations for 1676 stars. The literature is complete up to December1990. The catalog includes only Fe/H determinations obtained from highresolution spectroscopic observations based on detailed spectroscopicanalyses, most of them carried out with model atmospheres. The catalogcontains a good number of Fe/H determinations for stars from open andglobular clusters and for some supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds.

The onset of chromospheric activity among the A and F stars
Results are reported from a search for an upper boundary for the onsetof main-sequence star activity based on a quest for high-temperature UVline emission in a large collection of IUE spectra. It is shown thatstrong chromospheric emission is common among early F dwarf and subgiantstars. At its brightest, the emission is equal to that of the mostactive solar-type stars and is exceeded only by that of the spotted RSCVn and BY Dra variables. It is suggested that the emission from themain-sequence stars reaches a peak near B-V = 0.28, in the vicinity ofspectral type F0 V, before it declines to lower flux levels among thelate A stars. Emission is seen in some dwarf stars as early as B-V =0.25. It is demonstrated that the C II emission of stars earlier thanthe spectral type F5 is uncorrelated with rotation. Previous findingsthat the coronal X-ray:chromospheric UV flux ratio is lower for starsearlier than spectral type F5 than for those later than F5 areconfirmed.

Lithium depletion and rotation in main-sequence stars
Lithium abundances were measured in nearly 200 old disk-population Fstars to examine the effects of rotational braking on the depletion ofLi. The sample was selected to be slightly evolved off the main sequenceso that the stars have completed all the Li depletion they will undergoon the main sequence. A large scatter in Li abundances in the late Fstars is found, indicating that the Li depletion is not related to ageand spectral type alone. Conventional depletion mechanisms likeconvective overshoot and microscopic diffusion are unable to explain Lidepletion in F stars with thin convective envelopes and are doubly taxedto explain such a scatter. No correlation is found between Li abundanceand the present projected rotational velocity and some of the most rapidrotators are undepleted, ruling out meridional circulation as the causeof Li depletion. There is a somewhat larger spread in Li abundances inthe spun-down late F stars compared to the early F stars which shouldremain rotationally unaltered on the main sequence.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. IV - Measurements during 1986-1988 from the Kitt Peak 4 M telescope
One thousand five hundred and fifty measurements of 1006 binary starsystems observed mostly during 1986 through mid-1988 by means of speckleinterferometry with the KPNO 4-m telescope are presented. Twenty-onesystems are directly resolved for the first time, including newcomponents to the cool supergiant Alpha Her A and the Pleiades shellstar Pleione. A continuing survey of The Bright Star Catalogue yieldedeight new binaries from 293 bright stars observed. Corrections tospeckle measures from the GSU/CHARA ICCD speckle camera previouslypublished are presented and discussed.

UBV photoelectric catalogue (1986). II - Analysis
The UBV photoelectric data of the stars presenting several entries inthe 1986 edition of the UBV catalog have been systematicallyintercompared, and this paper presents a discussion of the stars forwhich discrepancies larger than 0.2 mag were found. Thirty-six probablyvariable stars have been detected, among which 18 are Be stars. Sixtyfurther stars present differences in the V magnitude larger than 0.2mag. Sixteen stars already appear in the NSV catalog. Although manyproblems are probably due to poor observations, new (eclipsing) variablestars may be found in this sample. Complete disagreement is foundbetween the values published from two independent sources in 34 cases. Afirst analysis of the quality of the UBV data shows that 65 percent ofthe differences in the V magnitude and in U-B color, for respectively11,500 and 7200 stars with two sources of data, are smaller than 0.04.The scatter on the B-V index appears to be smaller, since the samepercentage reaches 79 percent.

Lithium in early F dwarfs
The Canada-France-Hawaii telescope and Reticon detector fitted with acoude spectrograph was used to obtain spectra of 7 F0-F5 dwarf stars inorder to determine the Li abundances in early Pop I stars. The spectrawere collected witha 0.11 A resolution at a S/N ratio of 400-600. Thecosmic abundance ratio of Li/H = 1/1 billion was found in a third of thestars observed, i.e., the hottest and youngest objects. Furtherdepletions by factors of 3-10 were detected with 17 percent of thedwarfs, and 53 percent were depleted by factors of 10-150. The objectswere divided into those which were Li-rich and under 2 billion yr oldand those which were older and were depleted by factors of over 40 timesthe cosmic abundance. The oldest stars were most depleted. Curiously,the Li-rich stars had high rotation rates and the Li-poor stars had slowrotation rates, except for the Hyades-like dwarfs, which had low Liabundances and temperatures around 6400 K.

Absolute luminosity calibration of F stars
Luminosity calibrations are performed for a restricted sample of 706F-type field stars of all luminosity classes and a similarly restrictedsample of 251 main-sequence F stars. The samples are restricted withrespect to values of photometric and metallicity indices, propermotions, radial velocities, and apparent magnitudes. Both linear andsecond-order relations between absolute magnitude and the photometricindices beta, /c1/ or (b-y), /c1/ are considered.These relations are calibrated by the statistical parallax method basedon the principle of maximum likelihood. The possible effect ofinterstellar absorption on the calibration results is investigated alongwith an effect of a photometric correction to the absolute magnitudes.The results obtained are compared with those of Crawford (1975) as wellas with the trigonometric parallaxes. The coefficients of thecalibration relations are derived from the trigonometric parallaxes, andpoor agreement is indicated. It is concluded that the trigonometricparallaxes must be used very carefully and only for nearby stars.
