Classifications of the Host Galaxies of Supernovae
Classifications on the DDO system are given for the host galaxies of 177supernovae (SNe) that have been discovered since 1997 during the courseof the Lick Observatory Supernova Search with the Katzman AutomaticImaging Telescope. Whereas SNe Ia occur in all galaxy types, it isfound, at a high level of statistical confidence, that SNe Ib, Ic, andII are strongly concentrated in late-type galaxies. However, attentionis drawn to a possible exception provided by SN 2001I. This SN IInoccurred in the E2 galaxy UGC 2836, which was not expected to harbor amassive young supernova progenitor.

A 15 Kiloparsec X-Ray Disk in the Elliptical Galaxy NGC 1700
We present Chandra observations of the young elliptical galaxy NGC 1700.The X-ray isophotes are highly flattened between semimajor axes of 30"and 80", reaching a maximum ellipticity ɛX~0.65 at60" (15 kpc). The surface brightness profile in the spectrally softflattened region is shallower than that of the starlight, indicatingthat the emission comes from hot gas rather than stellar sources. Theflattening is so extreme that the gas cannot be in hydrostaticequilibrium in any plausible potential. A likely alternative is that thegas has significant rotational support. A simple model, representingisothermal gas distributed about a particular angular momentum, canreproduce the X-ray morphology while staying consistent with stellarkinematics. The specific angular momentum of the gas matches that of thestars in the most isophotally distorted outer part of the galaxy, andits cooling time matches the time since the last major merger. We inferthat the gas was acquired in that merger, which involved a preexistingelliptical galaxy with a hot interstellar medium. The hot gas carriedthe angular momentum of the encounter and has since gradually settledinto a rotationally flattened cooling disk.
